Plans to develop land
around city station unveiled

Plans
to redevelop
the land
around
Leicester
Station
have been
unveiled,
which could
create
2,800 jobs
in the
city.
Plans
drawn up
by Leicester
Regeneration
Company
propose
the area
all around
the station
would be
revamped
with offices,
shops,
bars and
restaurants,
surrounding
new open
spaces.
The
entrance
to the
station
would also
be moved
to Station
Street – with
the historic
station
building
remaining
in place.
The plans
will allow
the next
phase of
the New
Business
Quarter
to take
shape.
Negotiations
with Royal
Mail and
Network
Rail are
progressing
well and
a steering
board has
been set
up to help
bring the
plans to
fruition.
The steering
board is
being chaired
by Leicester
South MP
Sir Peter
Soulsby,
and involves
representatives
from emda,
Leicester
City Council,
LRC, Network
Rail, East
Midlands
Trains
and Royal
Mail.
John
Nicholls
said: “Once
negotiations
have completed
we will
be seeking
a developer
to invest
in the
project
and bring
these plans
forward.
This phase
of the
New Business
Quarter
is crucial
to the
regeneration
of the
city. Leicester
is ideally
located
for businesses
and it
is essential
we grow
this sector
within
the city.”
The first
phase of
the New
Business
Quarter
is underway,
with Colton
Square
almost
complete
and partly
occupied.
Developer
Cathco
has planning
permission
for the
redevelopment
of International
House on
Granby
Street
into office
and retail
units.
