Development hotting up
across Abbey Meadows

Developments
at Abbey
Meadows
- the area
around
the National
Space Centre
and the
nearby
waterside
in Belgrave
- are hotting
up, with
work on
major sites
now underway.
Abbey
Meadows
is one
of the
five key
areas in
the Masterplan
for the
city’s
regeneration,
drawn up
by Leicester
Regeneration
Company
and its
partners,
including
Leicester
City Council,
East Midlands
Development
Agency
and English
Partnerships.
The area
will include
a world-class
science
park, and
more than
3,000 waterside
homes.
At Abbey
Meadows
West -
a site
located
between
Abbey Park
Road, Abbey
Lane and
the National
Space Centre
- work
has started
on the
construction
of a new
access
road that
will link
the National
Space Centre
with the
A6. Work
on the
road is
set to
be completed
in October,
with work
on the
Science
Park to
start in
the New
Year. The
timescale
for the
development
is three
to five
years.
The
science
park aims
to help
retain
graduates
from the
city’s
two universities
in the
city, by
creating
new jobs
in science-based
businesses.
Plans
for a new
Audi car
showroom
have been
unveiled.
The 30,000-square-foot
development
will also
include
a service
centre.
Work is
set to
begin next
month (June)
and to
be completed
in January.
At Wolsey
Island
- a triangle
bounded
by the
river,
the canal
and Abbey
Park -
the first
development
is on site,
with the
conversion
of the
Shoe Factory
into 44
loft style
apartments.
Work is
set to
be completed
later this
year.
Planning
applications
have been
submitted
for around
1,600 homes
on the
former
Courtauld
and British
United
Shoe Machinery
sites.
Morris
Homes has
obtained
planning
permission
for over
300 luxury
apartments
on the
former
Miles Platts
site overlooking
Abbey Park.
Work is
set to
start on
site in
Summer
2007.
John
Nicholls,
chief executive
of Leicester
Regeneration
company,
said: “It’s
wonderful
to see
this amount
of development
happening
at Abbey
Meadows.
The area
is a key
component
of the
masterplan
for regeneration
in central
Leicester
and is
set to
become
one of
the most
exciting
areas of
the city.”
