Quantity
v Quality
11th
December
2007

From
our Chief
Executive
John Nicholls
With all
our partners,
public and
private,
we are making
headway in
delivering
the master
plan. Building
work is in
progress
on all five
of our key
areas. Over
half the
8,500 jobs
targeted
are in projects
which have
got as far
as planning
permission
or beyond,
as have about
a third of
the 8,000
or so new
homes.
So
we’re
heading in
the right
direction
on quantity,
but are we
doing quite
as well in
terms of
design quality?
There
are some
new buildings
of genuinely
national
or international
architectural
importance – the
Performing
Arts Centre,
the John
Lewis store
and cinema,
the LCB depot,
the forthcoming
Digital Media
Centre and
so on. I
think developments
like Colton
Square and
the Shoe
Factory also
set a pretty
high standard.
But there
are plenty
more, which
I won’t
single out,
which are,
at best,
just ordinary.
It seems
to me that,
as the momentum
of regeneration
grows, the
emphasis
needs to
shift to
raising the
standards
of the ordinary
to that of
the excellent.
That needs
effort and
commitment
by all the
people involved,
because those
buildings
will be part
of the city
for the next
50 years.
