This project aims to create 2,500 jobs in the service sector, a big step towards the Masterplan’s aim of broadening the range of jobs in the city.

Construction work is nearing completion on Hammerson/Hermes’ £350 million project to more than double the size of The Shires Shopping Centre which will re-open as Highcross Leicester is September 2008. A dazzling John Lewis store, and multi screen cinema are complemented by a wide range of leading shops, restaurants and 120 apartments.

The development has attracted quality brands such as Reiss, Zara, Apple and Ghost to the city for the first time. The restaurant quarter will be home to Yo! Sushi, Wagamama and Carluccios.

The substantial repaving of the city’s main shopping streets is a £19 million investment by Leicester City Council. Areas that have been completed include Gallowtree Gate, Clock Tower, Market Place Approach and Hotel Street. High Street has now been pedestrianised and street furniture and trees have been planted. Work is due to be complete to co-inside with the opening of Highcross Leicester.
