Leicester's
Regeneration
5th
September
2008
From
Ben Ravilious
director,
Ultimateweb
Ltd and one
of LRC’s
newest board
members
With several
LRC master
plan projects
coming to
fruition
and plans
afoot to
increase
the scope
of regeneration
it is proving
to be an
interesting
time to get
involved.
Through
the hard
work of the
LRC team
and its partners,
the proof
that Leicester
is no longer
a 'lost cause'
when it comes
to urban
renewal is
plain for
all to see.
Hopefully,
with this
point proven
we can have
the confidence
to do more
throughout
the city.
I'm excited
by the news
that LRC
is soon to
be absorbed
into a larger
city and
countywide
economic
development
company.
I would
particularly
like to see
a greater
emphasis
on smaller-scale
projects
involving
communities
across the
area - 'micro-regeneration'
if you like.
I'd also
like to see
less of the
'blank slate'
approach
to developments
with more
use of existing
architecture
and heritage
as inspiration
for 'place
making' rather
than being
seen as an
obstacle
to progress.
Finally,
I think there
is sometimes
a perception
that regeneration
is solely
aimed at
bringing
newcomers
to the city.
Obviously
attracting
new people
is important
but I believe
existing
residents
who have
long-term
roots and
commitments
to the city
should feel
that they
are the primary
beneficiaries.
I'd like
to see far
better 'buy-in'
from Leicester
people and
make regeneration
feel like
something
that they
are a part
of rather
than something
that just
'happens'
to them.
